Michele Lee Van Tassel was born in Digby, Nova Scotia. She received her early education in the Digby School system and went on to nursing school in St. John, New Brunswick. She graduated and has continued her chosen career in nursing . She is presently employed at Digby General Hospital, Digby, N.S. She lives with her common-law husband, Darryl Jelfs and they have two children, Jessie Lee Jelfs (B:1992-06-14) & Amber Kathleen Jelfs (B: 1997-04-10).
